Our 1st annual concert will be held here at Saint Philip Neri on Sunday, April 18th, 2 p.m. Under the direction of Ms. Linda Liberty, it will include a dedication of the organ, followed by a wonderful program of inspiring music in praise of God. Conceived in the ecumenical spirit, it is offered as a gift to the community that has welcomed us and been our home for nearly 17 years.

Each year, on the occasion of Lent, the Church invites us to a sincere review of our life in light of the teachings of the Gospel. This year, I would like to offer you some reflections on the great theme of justice, beginning from the Pauline affirmation: “The justice of God has been manifested through faith in Jesus Christ” (cf. Rm 3, 21-22).

Each year the holy season of Lent provides us a special time of grace and spiritual renewal so we may become better instruments in sharing the Gospel. This year, Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, falls on February 17, 2010. The present laws of the Church, regarding fast and abstinence during the Season of Lent, are as follows:

1. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast. On days of fast, one full meal is allowed. Two lesser meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one's needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted. Catholics who have completed their 18th year are bound by this law until the beginning of their 60th year.

2. Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence. On days of abstinence meats should not be taken at any meal. The law of abstinence binds all Catholics who have completed their 14th year.

WHAT IS THE BSA?
The Bishop’s Stewardship Appeal (BSA) is a primary source of funding to help sustain and expand ministries in the 116 parishes and missions and 32 Catholic Schools and agencies throughout the diocese. The diocese cannot subsidize all the necessary programs on its own and asks the parishes and missions to further help our brothers and sisters in need.

WHY DO WE NEED THESE MINISTRIES AND PROGRAMS?
The Catholic Church serves the needs of many people in our local diocese and beyond. While some of these services are offered at the parish level, it is often more effective when many join together in ministry and service of the people of the diocese.

WHAT SHOULD I GIVE?

Each day more CRS staff from around the globe arrive in Haiti, joining our existing staff of just over 300. Our headquarters building in Haiti was damaged but did not collapse. While aftershocks continued—including a 6.1 temblor this morning— staff slept outside and worked at desks pulled into the streets.
